According to UN projections, Africa’s population is set to double to 2.4 billion by 2050, and it is expected to hit 4.3 billion by the end of the century. By then, about one-third of all of humanity will live on the continent. While many studies have focused on the present and the future of Africa and its interconnections with Europe, it is rare to hear how young people from Africa view and interpret current developments unfolding in their countries. To fill this gap, Youth and Africa brings together seven outstanding young professionals from the Maghreb and sub-Saharan Africa. They shed light on challenges and opportunities, and remind us that “Africa is a voice to be heard, not a problem to be solved”.
Lorenzo Kamel è direttore delle collane editoriali dello IAI (Quaderni IAI, IAI Research Studies, e Global Politics and Security, pubblicata da Peter Lang) e Professore associato di Storia contemporanea (M-STO/04) presso il Dipartimento di Studi storici dell’Università di Torino. È direttore scientifico del progetto New-Med ed è stato coordinatore IAI del progetto Horizon2020 MENARA. Ha ottenuto incarichi di insegnamento e ricerca in numerose università in Europa, America e Medio Oriente, tra cui la Albert-Ludwigs-Universität di Friburgo – dove è stato Marie Curie Experienced Researcher – e l’Università di Harvard, dove, con la sponsorship di Roger Owen e Sara Roy, è stato anche Postdoctoral Fellow per due anni. Ha conseguito una laurea in Filosofia presso La Sapienza, un MA biennale in Israel Studies alla Hebrew University di Gerusalemme e un dottorato in Storia all’Università di Bologna.
