Sergio Marchisio, Professor Emeritus at Sapienza University of Rome, where he taught International and Space Law since 1998, is Professor of Space Law at the same University and Scientific Responsible of two research projects: OSL ‒ Outer Space Law for International Cooperation and Sustainable Development, funded by the Italian Space Agency; HABITABLE ‒ Linking Climate Change, Habitability and Social Tipping Points, funded by the European Commission under the Horizon 2020. Chairman of the European Centre for Space Law at the European Space Agency, General Counsel of the International Astronautical Federation, and Member of the Advisory Council of the European Space Policy Institute. Senior Legal Advisor of the Italian Space Agency, where he was Member of the Board of Directors (2014-2018). Founder and Former Director of the Institute for International Legal Studies of the National Research Council (1995-2011).
Italian Delegate to many international conferences, such as the 2012 Berlin Diplomatic Conference for the Adoption of the UNIDROIT Protocol on Space Assets and the 2015 New York Multilateral Negotiations on an International Code of Conduct for Outer Space Activities proposed by the European Union. Since 1998, Italian delegate to the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space where he served as Chairman of the Legal Subcommittee (2004-2006), and Co-chair of Expert Group D of the Working Group on Long-Term Sustainability of Outer Space Activities (2010-2018). Member of the UN Group of Governmental Experts on Outer Space Transparency and Confidence-Building Measures (2011-2013), and Member of the UN Group of Governmental Experts on Practical Measures for the Prevention of an Arms Race in Outer Space (2018-2019). Since 2012, Member of the Specialized Panels of Arbitrators of the Permanent Court of Arbitration for Disputes relating to Outer Space Activities.
