Methodologies Applied to Archaeological Potential Predictivity

The MAPPA project (Methodologies Applied to Archaeological Potential Predictivity), launched in 2011 and funded by the Region of Tuscany, resulted from years of collaboration between the University of Pisa, local Superintendencies, and the Municipality of Pisa. Its aim is to collect, organize, and make accessible archaeological data related to Pisa’s historical development.
In its first year, the project focused on retrieving and digitizing unpublished or hard-to-access archaeological records. This led to the creation of MappaGIS, a freely accessible web-based mapping tool, and MOD, the first Italian open archaeological data archive. These tools follow EU guidelines for public data access.
Beyond technical aspects, the project also addresses the need for updated documentation standards and faster data sharing to promote research progress and interdisciplinary debate.
